Fly Creek is a hamlet that lies just west of the Village of Cooperstown in New York State. Located just over three hours from Albany, Fly Creek is home to many quaint and charming attractions, making it the perfect place to plan a long weekend.

Driving to Fly Creek takes visitors through Rotterdam, Cobleskill, and Cooperstown, with plenty of scenic vistas along the way.

Fly Creek Cider Mill

Opening for the season each May, Fly Creek Cider Mill and Orchard is a lovely place to visit. The water-powered cider mill has pressed fresh cider for more than 160 years. At the Mill Marketplace, visitors can choose from more than 150 specialty food items, such as a variety of fudges, cheeses, salsas, apple wines, and hard ciders. Visitors who are of drinking age can sample from the Farm Winery’s hard ciders and wines as well as craft beers at the mill’s tasting bar, making this venue one of the best Fly Creek things to do.

Pail Shop Vineyards

Wine tasting is always a romantic excursion, and Pail Shop Vineyards in Cooperstown makes its wines entirely onsite. The vineyard is particularly proud of its Painted Pail Red sangria, which is best enjoyed on a warm summer night, overlooking the Fly Creek Valley. Pack a picnic and enjoy the sunset with a loved one at this beautiful Fly Creek retreat.

The Otesaga Resort Hotel

Fly Creek visitors looking for a place to stay may want to consider the Otesaga Resort Hotel in Cooperstown. Built in 1909, the hotel is a member of the Historic Hotels of America and is on the National Register for Historic Places. Nestled on the shore of Lake Otsego, the hotel also includes a famed golf course, designed by Devereux Emmet, where guests can schedule a round.

Kingfisher Tower

Sometimes things are worth visiting for their sheer beauty and interesting appearance. The Kingfisher Tower on the eastern shore of Lake Otsego is what is known architecturally as a “folly,” because it has no practical use, despite its appearance. Edward Clark decided to fund the Gothic Revival structure in 1876 purely to add some beauty to the area and provide construction jobs. Because it is on private land, visitors can only get close to the tower on the water.

Fairy Springs Park

A 31-acre park within the Town of Middlefield, Fairy Springs Park is an ideal visiting spot for folks of all ages. The park includes a pavilion with a stone fireplace, a boat dock, picnic tables, and barbecue pits. During the warm months, it’s a great place to swim, boat, and host private parties. Community events take place at the park throughout the year, including seasonal fireworks.

Lake Front Restaurant and Bar

Not much can beat enjoying a meal on the waterfront of an idyllic lake. The Lake Front Restaurant and Bar in Cooperstown offers unmatched views of Lake Otsego as well as an enticing menu. Guests can expect fresh seafood, traditional American flavors, and even fishing pole rentals. The attached hotel is also a great spot to stay for walkability in Cooperstown.
