Albany International Airport has the distinction of being the oldest municipal airport in the United States.  It opened in 1928 at its current site, and has welcomed landings by famous airmen and women including:  Amelia Earhart, James Doolittle, Clarence Chamberlain, and Charles Lindbergh.

Currently, Albany International Airport handles an average of fifty-five daily arrivals and departures for commercial airlines such as Delta, Southwest, United, American Airlines, JetBlue, Allegiant, and the newly-added Avelo Airlines.  The average number of passengers are projected to be 1.4 million in 2024.

Modernizing and expanding the facility over the years has transformed it into an international air center of the future. We’re pleased to have obtained this substantial funding through the Upstate Airport Economic Development and Revitalization Competition, as well as through Congress’ passage of the infrastructure bill, which provided an additional $28.7 million in federal funding. Together, these resources will make our vision for a brighter, more welcoming Albany International Airport a reality.

Therapy Dog Program

Albany International Airport is one of the airports across the country that has adopted a Therapy Dog Program with over 25 volunteer dog handlers who make their canines available seven days a week.  The friendly teams roam throughout the airport wherever passengers need some calming canine love, from check-in to boarding.  The program serves to make the travel experience as pleasant as possible for not just travelers, but airport support personnel as well.

“Interaction with the dogs helps to ease stress, and brightens the travelers’ day,” said Helen Chadderdon, Concessions/Ambassador Program Manager.  “The canines often prompt smiles and laughter, especially when the dogs perform tricks, and welcome people to pet them.”

The canines are effective at helping people who have fear of flying, turn sadness into joy and provide entertainment, especially when there are flight delays and cancellations.
