Ways to Prepare for a Winter Storm

How to Prepare for a Winter StormWinter in the Northeast means snow. We’re usually guaranteed at least one blizzard every year that could leave you trapped at home and without power. Don’t get caught unprepared! If you’re wondering how to prepare for a winter storm, keep reading for our best tips.

Winterize Your Home

Start by making sure your house is winter-ready. Read our blog on winterizing your home to learn what you can do!

Consider Light Sources

While candles can provide a source of light during a power outage, they can also be a fire hazard. We recommend using flashlights. Take time to test your flashlights to ensure they are in working order and stock up on batteries.

And don’t rely on your cell phone for its flashlight feature! Save the battery on your phone for emergency calls.

Create a Kit

Make a winter emergency kit and store it in a safe place. Include a minimum of 3 days’ worth of food and water per person in your household. Confirm you have at least a 7-day supply of any medications. Also consider adding a first-aid kit, cash, tools and warm clothing.

Shop our travel store both online and in-store to stock up on quality emergency items such as radios and flashlights that can be powered by turning a hand crank.

Write Out Emergency Contacts

If there’s a power outage, you may lose access to any contact information that is stored digitally. Write down phone numbers of friends, family, neighbors and any local emergency lines.

Alternate Heating Methods

Many heating systems will not work when the power is out. Consider having an alternate heating method ready such as a fireplace or wood or coal burning stove. Don’t forget to have them cleaned and inspected before lighting a fire!

And speaking of staying warm, don’t forget to double check your stash of extra blankets is clean and ready to go!

Turn Up the Heat

When there’s an impending storm, turn up the heat on your thermostat if you are able. If the power goes out, your house will stay warm longer. Close off any rooms that are not in use and try to open any doors leading outdoors as little as possible.

By preparing for a winter storm ahead of time, you’ll have peace of mind that you’re ready for whatever winter may hold!
